The importance of having an antivirus solution (and what can happen if you don’t)

We’ve all done it, clicked on a link, plugged in a memory stick, downloaded an attachment, movies, songs or even software without verifying whether they’re safe or not. Without a proper antivirus solution in place, this can have dire consequences for your PC.

There are millions of computer viruses that exist today. Every day, the AV-TEST Institute registers over 350,000 new malicious programs (malware) and potentially unwanted applications (PUA). And CNN Business estimates over a million in total.

Cybersecurity company Webroot lists some of the symptoms of a PC virus as:

  • Your computer being noticeably slower
  • Your computer behaving erratically
  • Loss of data
  • Your PC frequently crashing

But there are even worse effects to your PC having a virus. On the extreme end, you could find yourself with a PC that completely fails to function or have important information such as banking details compromised because of phishing viruses.

An antivirus solution could fix all that. Having adequate antivirus and security features installed on your PC, with regular maintenance means that any malware or harmful software gets flagged before they can wreak havoc on your PC. And if installed after the fact, can be detected and destroyed.

Computer safety company NOD32 ESET lists some of the benefits of having an antivirus as follows:

  • Protection from attacks demanding a ransom to unlock your PC
  • Stopping hackers from accessing your PC and taking unauthorised actions
  • The ability to shop or bank without worrying about the safety of your information
  • Keeping your home network safe as virus attacks can go beyond just your own PC
  • Conveniently storing passwords without the fear of them getting compromised
  • In the case of business, keeping client information safe and secure
  • Keeping servers safe and preventing data breaches

It’s no understatement then to say it’s very important to have an antivirus installed in your PC. Then you can have peace of mind knowing that your important information is safe. That your PC will continue to function normally and you won’t have to worry about issues such as identity theft and fraud.
